Horrors of SLO – Symmetrical Lupoid Onychodystrophy

Black Schutzhund Shepherd is currently learning about SLO the hard way with one of her Shepherds. This disease also affects Giant Schnauzers which is why I'm posting about it here.

Symmetrical Lupoid Onychodystrophy (SLO) is a disease affecting the nails on a dog's paws, which causes complete loss of the nails (Onychomadesis)... read the whole post complete with pictures on her blog:

Thank You Tracy, I'm happy that this has been helpful to others, as I was at a complete loss when it first started happening. Some vets have not even heard of this, so it pays to do your own research. Cheers!

I think I have inadvertatly discovered the cure to lupoid onchodystrophy! My female schnauzer was diagnosed over 3 and a half years ago and lost all her nails. The nailbeds healed over and she didnt seem to mind. Just recently she developed a small lump on one of her teats and my vet suggested it to be cancer. I added a mixture of cottage cheese and flaxseed oil to her regular food in a bid to reduce the cancer growth until I could afford an operation (read that this might work). That was 2 months ago and today when I was grooming her and her daughter I was amazed to find that ALL OF HER CLAWS HAD RE-GROWN! They were not malformed - nice and shiney black!
I need someone else to try this... 2tbsp of organic cold pressed flaxseed oil mixed with a 1/4 cup of dry cottage cheese curds - once a day- everyday.

It's great that you've had such a success with your Schnauzer! I hope she'll continue to be healthy. I've fortunately never had an SLO dog so can only imagine what it would be like for my dog to lose their nails, but I do know it's cyclical.
